Oniwaki

...Developed as a herring fishing ground for the Matsumae Domain in the early 19th century, it enjoyed a golden age of herring fishing from the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period. Fishing remains the main industry today, with the two fishing ports of Oshidomari and Oniwaki on the southeast coast producing large catches of kelp, sea urchins, flounder, squid, and other fish, particularly the well-known Rishiri kelp and barefoot kelp. Mount Rishiri and part of the coastline belong to the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, and are crowded with tourists and hikers in the summer. ...
