French chanson singer, lyricist, and composer. Born in Sète in the south of France as the son of a stonemason. He moved to Paris in 1940 and made his debut in 1952. His first album, released in 1954, won the Grand Prix de France disc award, and he became so popular that his songs appeared on the hit charts alongside other popular songs. He played the guitar and sang his own compositions, and his songs were intellectually refined and full of poetry and passion. The content of his songs, starting with his debut song "Bad Rumors," was also permeated with a rebellious spirit. His singing style was rather blunt, but he always exuded a warm humanity. He was known as the "national poet," receiving an award from the Académie Française in 1967, but illness prevented him from performing much in the 1970s.
