[ I ] [Synonym] Ethylene oxide [ II ] A general term for three-membered ring ether compounds obtained by the oxidation of olefins with peracid. Simple ethylene oxide is produced industrially by air oxidation of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst, but it is generally obtained by the Williamson synthesis. It reacts with water in the presence of acid to give 1,2-diols, and with hydrogen halides to give halohydrins.
