Okapi - Okapi (English spelling)

An animal of the order Artiodactyla, class Mammalia, family Giraffidae. It evolved from the class Palaeotraginae, which is a common ancestor with the giraffe, and there is only one species in one genus. It is found in the Congo region of Africa, and its habitat is the humid tropical rainforest. Unlike the giraffe, this species retains many of the morphological characteristics of its ancestor, with a shoulder height of 1.6 metres, tail length of 40 centimetres, and weight of about 200 kilograms, and only the males have a pair of hairy horns. It has many similarities to the giraffe, such as a slightly long neck, a low back of the body, and a tuft of hair on its tail, but its hair is short, its body colour is brown to blackish brown, and it has white stripes on its rump and limbs, and when it was discovered (1901) it was thought to be a relative of the horse. The dentition is

That makes a total of 32.

They live alone or in pairs deep in the rainforest, feeding on leaves, fruits, and buds. They have excellent hearing, and even indigenous people have difficulty seeing them. The gestation period is about 14 months, and they give birth to one baby. The newborn weighs about 15 kilograms, is 80 centimeters tall at the shoulder, stands up shortly after birth, and starts sucking milk 6 to 12 hours later. Although breeding in captivity was considered difficult, it was first successfully bred at the Paris Zoological Park in 1957, and has since been successfully bred at zoos in various locations, including Basel in Switzerland, Antwerp in Belgium, and Bristol in the UK. The first example of breeding in Japan was when Yokohama Zoological Gardens Zoorasia in Yokohama City received one male from the San Diego Wild Animal Park and one female from the Dallas Zoo on November 5, 1997, and the pair later gave birth to a female baby on November 21, 2000. Also, on June 6, 2001, a female was sent from the San Diego Wild Animal Park to Ueno Zoo in Tokyo as part of a breeding program.
