It is an annual plant of the Chenopodiaceae family native to Siberia, China, and Japan, and is in season from summer to early autumn.
It got its name from its resemblance to the seaweed hijiki.
In Japan, it grows wild on sandy coasts and has been eaten since the Edo period.
○ Nutritional value: Rich in carotene, vitamin C, and potassium, and also contains a balanced amount of minerals such as calcium and magnesium.
It contains 680mg of potassium, 150mg of calcium, and 51mg of magnesium per 100g, making it an effective source of minerals. Potassium helps excrete unnecessary sodium, which helps prevent and improve high blood pressure.
Calcium is a component that strengthens bones. When cooking, it is recommended to simmer it with dried small sardines. Vitamin D helps increase calcium absorption.
The carotene content is similar to that of komatsuna, which suppresses active oxygen and boosts immunity. Its synergistic effect with chlorophyll also strengthens the skin, making it less likely to catch a cold.

　シベリア、中国、日本が原産地のアカザ科の1年草で、旬(しゅん)は夏から初秋です。
　海草のヒジキに似ていることからこの名がつきました。
　わが国では海岸の砂地に自生しており、江戸時代から食用にされています。
○栄養成分としての働き
　カロテン、ビタミンＣ、カリウムが豊富で、カルシウム、マグネシウムといったミネラルもバランスよく含んでいます。
　カリウムは100g中680mg、カルシウムは150mg、マグネシウムは51mg含んでおり、有効なミネラル源となります。カリウムは不要なナトリウムを排泄(はいせつ)するので、高血圧の予防・改善に役立ちます。
　カルシウムは、骨を丈夫にする成分です。調理の際は、ちりめんじゃこなどと煮びたしにするのがおすすめです。ビタミンＤの働きでカルシウムの吸収率が高まります。
　カロテンの含有量もコマツナなみで、活性酸素を抑え、免疫力を高めてくれます。葉緑素との相乗効果で皮膚も丈夫になり、かぜをひきにくくします。
