[Local anesthesia]
A method of numbing local sensation by injecting a local anesthetic into the nerve fibers at the site where it has been administered and inhibiting and blocking the conduction of stimuli. There are several types of local anesthesia: (1) topical anesthesia, (2) infiltration anesthesia, which is applied to the mucosal surface, (3) local anesthesia in the narrow sense (infiltration injection into a local area), (4) conduction anesthesia (injecting a local anesthetic into the path of a peripheral nerve to block nerve transmission. Also called nerve block), (5) spinal anesthesia (injecting a local anesthetic into the spinal subarachnoid space to block the anterior and posterior roots of the spinal cord), and (6) epidural anesthesia (injecting a local anesthetic into the epidural space of the spine to block the anterior and posterior roots of the spinal cord).
