This freshwater lake, with an area of 2.10 km2 , is located in the northeast of Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, between National Route 36 and the JR Muroran Main Line and Chitose Line. It is a lagoon surrounded by the peat bogs of the Yufutsu Plain, and part of the lakeside is a wetland. It is known as a stopover and wintering site for migratory birds, and there are over 260 species of wild birds that can be observed. In 1981, the Wild Bird Society of Japan established it as Japan's first bird sanctuary. In December 1991, it was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland.
