In 1948, Miles Davis, a trumpet player with the Parker Combo, introduced innovative elements of bop to his arrangement-oriented nonet, elevating the competitive and uncontrolled jam sessions into group expression. It was around this time that the term "modern jazz" came to be used. Meanwhile, white leaders such as Woody Herman (1913-87) in the East and Stanley (Stan) N. Kenton (1912-79) in the West both incorporated bop elements into their big bands, and gained popularity by nurturing young, talented white players.
