A type of hairstyle worn by young girls. It was so named because the short, trimmed hairstyle resembles the head of a kappa in mythology. It has appeared in documents since around 1898 (Meiji 31). It is a variation of hairstyles for young girls such as the kirikamuro of the Edo period and the mezashi and warawa styles that came before that, but this style is even shorter. Adult kappa are said to have cut hair, and it was popular in Europe and the United States during and after World War I. It was adopted by young Japanese women in the early Showa period, and saw the birth of the "modern girl." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
