A medieval French song story. Author unknown. Dating from around 1200. The work alternates between verse and prose, with the introduction sung in verse and the plot developed in prose. The story is an idyllic love story between a young lord and a beautiful slave girl (actually the daughter of a lord) whom he buys from a slave trafficker. Aucassin, the young lord of the castle of Beaucaire in southern France, loves the slave Nicolette, but her father opposes the marriage and they cannot marry. As she still refuses to give up, the lord imprisons Aucassin in a dungeon and Nicolette in a tower. The two escape separately and escape into the forest, then attempt to flee to a foreign land by boat, but a storm hits the ship and the two are separated. Nicolette returns to her home country to meet father and daughter, but disguises herself as a traveling musician to search for Aucassin, and they meet at the castle of Beaucaire and finally get married. Written in a refreshing style like an early spring morning, this is a jewel-like short piece, a masterpiece with a pre-Renaissance feel, filled with ideas of respect for humanity and worldly pleasures.
