The Spartan assembly of ancient Greece. It was the highest state body in Sparta, first run by the king and then by the ephor, and was made up of all Spartan citizens over the age of 30. It made decisions on foreign policy, including the declaration of war and peace, the signing of treaties, the succession to the throne, the appointment of military commanders, the election of ephors and elders, and the reform of laws. It was the equivalent of the ekklesia in other Greek states. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
