German poet, essayist, translator, and cultural historian. Born to an old family in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), he was interested in literature from an early age. He studied classical philology and archaeology at the universities of Berlin, Bonn, and Göttingen, while also traveling to England and Italy. He became friends with George, Hofmannsthal, and R. A. Schröder. His goal from an early stage was a "creative restoration" of culture and literature (1927 speech) that drew on the sources of the cultural heritage of Europe in Greece, Rome, and the Middle Ages, and he attempted to achieve this through poetry written in strict traditional verse forms, essays that constituted fragments of major cultural historical works such as "Villa" (1907) and "Pisa" (1938), and outstanding translations of Dante's "New Life" and "Divine Comedy" (1922).
