Katyn was a forest on the banks of the Dnieper River near Smolensk in western Russia, where Polish officers were massacred in the early stages of World War II. The German army, which invaded the Soviet Union, announced in April 1943 that it had found the bodies of 4,321 murdered Polish officers in Katyn Forest, which led to a breakdown in relations between the Soviet Union and the Polish government in exile, which had been growing increasingly tense over territorial disputes. When the Soviet army invaded Poland in September 1939, they captured about 15,000 Polish officers, most of whom had been missing since May 1940.
