…Finland folklorist. Following in the footsteps of his father Julius Krohn (1835-88), who could be said to be the founder of Finnish folklore studies, he marked a period in the study of the national epic poem, the Kalevala, established his father's "historical-geographical methodology" through the study of folk tales, and together with his student Aarne, solidified the reputation of the Finnish School. He was appointed the first lecturer in folklore at the University of Helsinki, and later served for many years as professor of Finnish folklore, comparative folklore, Finnish language, and Finnish literature. In addition to his research, he was an excellent teacher who trained capable successors in a wide range of fields, and spread the methodology and academic style of the Finnish School. …
