1858‐1935 American newspaper executive. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1876, he became a printer for the Tribune in Knoxville, then moved to edit the Dispatch in Chattanooga, and in 1878 joined the management of the Times in the same city. He achieved great success as a local newspaper executive, but in 1896 he was entrusted with the management of the New York Times, which was in decline, and rebuilt it into a conservative, high-quality paper, laying the foundation for what it is today.
