Paleoloxodon

Paleoloxodon
This genus includes fossil animals from the middle and late Pleistocene of the proboscidean suborder Elephantidae, such as Naumann's Elephant (Palaeoloxodonta) and Aomori's Elephant (Elephantidae). They adapted to the temperate grasslands of Eurasia. Their cheek teeth do not have as pronounced diamond-shaped ridges as those of Loxodonta , but the tendency is still clearly visible. Hikoshichiro Matsumoto created the name as a subgenus, meaning "old Loxodon," and H. Osborn elevated it to a genus, but scholars such as Osborn who opposed the subdivision of elephants did not use it as a genus name, causing confusion in the scientific name.
