…The largest diamond from India, the Great Mughal, was said to have weighed about 280 carats, but it disappeared in the 17th century. However, one theory is that it was polished and transformed into the Koh-i-noor (about 106 carats), which was presented to Queen Victoria and added to the royal treasures, or the Orlov (about 195 carats), which was said to have been ripped from the eye of a goddess statue that had once been placed in a temple in southern India and given to Catherine II of Russia. The Hope (about 44 carats), purchased by Louis XIV in the 17th century, was a blue diamond known as a stone of bad luck, and many people who wore it were executed, such as Madame de Montespan and Marie Antoinette, or suffered unfortunate deaths and family misfortunes, such as the Hope family, the bankers who later purchased it. …
