Genichiro Inokuma

Genichiro Inokuma

Western-style painter. Born in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. Dropped out of Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1926 (Taisho 15). After twice receiving special awards at the Teiten Exhibition, he formed the Shinseisakuha Association with his comrades in 1936 (Showa 11), which he continues to this day. From 1938 to 1940, he traveled to Europe and received instruction from Matisse. In 1951 (Showa 26), he won the Mainichi Art Award for his murals at Keio University Student Hall and other locations. In the same year, he exhibited his work at the 1st Sao Paulo Biennial Exhibition, and from the following year, he frequently exhibited his work at the Carnegie International Art Exhibition (Pittsburgh). In 1955, he moved to the United States and lived in New York, where he developed his own unique field of abstract painting. In 1964, he received the National Museum of Modern Art Award for his work "Entrance" at the Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition. He continued to create works in both Japan and the United States.

洋画家。香川県高松市に生まれる。1926年(大正15)東京美術学校を中退。帝展で二度特選ののち、36年(昭和11)同志と新制作派協会を結成して現在に至る。38~40年渡欧し、マチスの指導を受ける。51年(昭和26)慶応義塾大学学生ホールほかの壁画により毎日美術賞。同年第1回サンパウロ・ビエンナーレ展、翌年からカーネギー国際美術展(ピッツバーグ)にたびたび出品する。55年渡米してニューヨークに住み、抽象画に独自の領域を開いた。64年現代日本美術展で『エントランス』により国立近代美術館賞を受ける。日本とアメリカの両方で制作を続けていた。
