Augusta (English spelling)
A city in the eastern part of Georgia, USA. Located about 270 km southeast of Atlanta, it is a river port at the end of the Savannah River route. The town was founded when a trading post was built in 1735. At that time, fur trading was thriving. After the Civil War, it became a major cotton distribution center, and cotton textiles became its main industry. It produces high-quality kaolin and firebricks. There are many historical buildings, including St. Paul's Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1950, as well as Augusta National Golf Course, where the Masters Tournament is held every year, Augusta University (founded in 1925), and the Medical College of Georgia (predecessor to the Academy of Medicine, founded in 1828). Population: 195,844 (2010).
