Austrian sculptor. Born in Esslingen. After training in Vienna, he traveled to Italy around 1714-15. In the 1920s he worked on coin casting at the Salzburg Mint, and in 1728 he was invited to Pressburg, where he worked on the construction of churches and altars until 1738. His masterpieces include the Statue of St. Martin (1732), which he created during this time, and the Fountain at Neumarkt Square (1739) which he created after returning to Vienna. His works show a clear intention for structure, and in this respect he is regarded as a pioneer of sober classicism in opposition to the Baroque style. He died in Vienna.
