Chemical formula: NH ₄ I. Colorless crystals. At room temperature, it has a cubic crystal system (α-form) with a sodium chloride structure and a lattice constant of 7.244 Å. Specific gravity: 2.511. At temperatures below -17.6°C, it has a cesium chloride structure (β-form) with a lattice constant of 4.37 Å. At temperatures below -41.6°C, it becomes the γ-form. In the γ-form, the tetrahedral NH ₄ ⁺ is tetrahedral in symmetry due to hydrogen bonds between N-H...I, but in the β-form, it is cubic in symmetry because it does not face in a fixed direction. When heated, it sublimes at 551°C. It is deliquescent and photosensitive.
