Born: July 2, 1898 in Tokyo, Japan [Died] April 28, 1978. Western-style painter, Ota, Tokyo. Born as the eldest son of theater critic Kitaro Oka. He learned drawing from Saburosuke Okada while attending Azabu Junior High School, and entered the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1919. Immediately after graduating in 1924, he went to France to study under Tsuguharu Foujita. He continued to exhibit his work at the Salon d'Automne and the Exhibition of Independants, and became a member of the Salon d'Automne. He stayed in France for about 15 years, and returned to Japan in 1939. The following year, in 1940, he became an active member of the Shunyo-kai. In 1964, he received the Japan Art Academy Prize, and in 1968, he was selected as a member of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1972, he was awarded the Order of Culture. He produced quiet, emotional works with intellectual composition and brushwork that is linked to the pointillism of Neo-Impressionism. He also had a deep knowledge of paints and painting techniques. He remained single all his life. His major works include Butterfly Flower (1951, Shimonoseki City Museum of Art), Snow Power Plant (1956, Artizon Museum), Village (A) (1962, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), and Terraces (1978).
