...After 1978, Turkey was economically bankrupt. The halt in imports of raw materials led to a drop in factory operating rates, and the shortage of daily necessities due to the energy crisis, as well as the inflation rate reaching 100% per year, not only ruined the lives of the people, but the indiscriminate terrorist attacks by both left and right groups even made the people feel a sense of crisis for their lives. On September 12, 1980, the military staged another coup, and the National Security Council, headed by Chief of Staff Evren Kenan and consisting of five members including the commanders of the army, navy, and air forces, seized full power. The Council immediately announced to the world that Turkey would remain within the framework of the NATO system, and suspended the constitution and closed the parliament (the end of the Second Republic). ...
