The Weavers, a group formed after World War II with Seeger at the center, recorded Good Night, Irene, written by black folk singer Leadbelly, in 1950, which became a big hit, and college trios and quartets were formed all over the country, influenced by the group. Among them, The Kingston Trio's remake of an old folk song, Tom Dooley (1958), became a big hit, and folk songs came to completely occupy a part of popular music. In the 1960s, as the mood of innovation spread across America, folk songs were highly praised, and each genre gained popularity, from Seeger and Bob Dylan, who continued the tradition of protest songs, to songs with a strong commercial coloring, but in the latter half of the 1960s, they gradually changed in quality, some of them merged with rock, and some of them declined. ...
