Art unique to the Scandinavian Vikings, who were active from the 8th to 11th centuries. Their weapons, ritual vessels, necklaces, and clasps are decorated with animal motifs and grotesque, curvilinear ornaments similar to the chains of 7th-8th century Ireland, and their stones inscribed with runes recording their expeditions are particularly outstanding, as is the development of their ship design. In terms of architecture, communal houses are noteworthy. With the spread of Christianity from the second half of the 11th century, their art became mixed with European styles, but even after Scandinavia became part of the European sphere politically and culturally, some aspects of their style remained traditional.
