A city in the central south of Hyogo Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1967. It lies in the Manganji River basin, a tributary of the Kakogawa River, and urban areas have developed in the former town areas of Kasai, Hojo, and Izumi. The Hojo Railway and Chugoku Expressway pass through the city. A grain-producing region in the Harima Plain, it produces a lot of rice and sake, and grape cultivation is also thriving. In addition to the traditional Banshu textiles and tatami mats, the electrical industry has also become popular in recent years.
