[Origin of Alchemy]
It is said that alchemy preceded chemistry. Also, considering the word al (the Arabic definite article) in the word alchemy, it is thought that alchemy and the word al-kīmiyā' that represents it originated in Arabic. Furthermore, some scholars, such as J. Needham, link alchemy to the Chinese word for metal.
