This saltwater fish belongs to the order Tetraodontiformes and family Polytminae of the family Polytminae. It is found in all parts of Japan south of Hokkaido, as well as in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Its body is oblong and laterally compressed. The spine of its dorsal fin is located behind the center of the eye. The protrusion at the rear end of its pelvic fin is immobile. Its body is gray, and when alive, dark spots are scattered on the sides of its body. All of its fins are green-blue. The surface of its body is covered with tiny scales. Its long snout is reminiscent of a horse, from which it gets its name. It can reach a total length of 30 centimeters. The dorsal edge of the snout of the male is prominent, while that of the female is straight, and females are taller than males, making it easy to distinguish between the sexes. It lives along the coast in large schools, spawning from May to July. From the early 1960s to the early 1970s, there was an abnormal proliferation of the fish, to the point that fixed net fishermen in various regions had difficulty disposing of them, but in recent years the catch has stabilized again. The meat is skinned and dried, and sold as a souvenir. It tastes slightly inferior to that of the filefish, but is still delicious.
