Robbins
American dancer and choreographer. Born in New York. Studied ballet with Tudor and theater with Kazan. Joined Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre) in 1940, choreographed Fancy Free to music by Bernstein in 1944, and achieved great success. From 1949 to 1959, he served as assistant artistic director of the New York City Ballet at the invitation of Balanchine, and presented many works. During this time, he also choreographed for Broadway musicals, producing hits such as The King and I (1951), Peter Pan (1954), and West Side Story (1957). He formed his own ballet company, Ballet USA, but it did not last long, and he returned to the New York City Ballet in 1969. After Balanchine's death, he served as artistic director with Peter Martins (1946-), but retired in 1989. His major works include "The Cage" (1951, Stravinsky), "Afternoon of a Faun" (1953, Debussy), "Concert" (1956, Chopin), and "Glass Pieces" (1983, Philip Glass).
