This refers to a photoelectric detector that has sensitivity in the wavelength range of 10 to 380 nm. Because the photon energy is large, external photon effect detectors with a metal photocathode and photomultiplier tubes with an ultraviolet-visible conversion phosphor such as sodium salicylate on the front surface are often used. The wavelength range shorter than 200 nm is particularly called the extreme ultraviolet range, and various detectors with unique characteristics are used in the wavelength range from 120 nm onwards. For example, there are strip-type windowless photomultiplier tubes with a continuous semiconductor secondary electron surface and ionization detectors that use the photoionization of a sealed gas.

光検出器の中でも10～380nmの波長領域に感度をもつ光電検出器をいう。光子エネルギーが大きいため金属光電面をもつ外部光子効果型検出器をはじめ，サリチル酸ソーダなどの紫外‐可視変換蛍光体を前面にもつ光電子増倍管がよく用いられる。とくに200nmより短波長側は極紫外域と呼ばれ，なかでも120nmから短波長側では特徴のある種々の検出器が用いられる。例えば連続構造の半導体二次電子面をもつストリップ型の窓なし光電子増倍管や，封入ガスの光電離を用いた電離型検出器がある。
