Stanford University - Leland Stanford Junior University

Stanford University - Leland Stanford Junior University

A private university in Palo Alto, California, USA. Leland (1824-93), who was the builder of the intercontinental railroad, a state governor, and a federal senator, and Jane Stanford (1825-1905), founded the university in 1885 in memory of their only son, who died at the age of 15, with the hope that "all the children of California will become our children." The first president was David Starr Jordan (1851-1931), and the university opened in 1891. Currently, the university has seven schools, known as the "seven pillars of learning," namely, arts and sciences, engineering, education, business administration, earth sciences, law, and medicine, and each school is independent but also interrelated, forming a university-wide faculty. The faculty teaches both undergraduate and graduate level students, and students can share the facilities and equipment of other schools. The quality of the graduate school is always ranked at the top of the national rankings.

In the late 1980s, the university sparked a great deal of controversy by abolishing general education courses that focused on Western culture and implementing curriculum reforms based on multiculturalism, which respects racially and ethnically diverse cultures.

In addition, the "industry-academia collaboration" centered around the nearby Silicon Valley is seen as a model for joint ventures between university research and corporate activities. As of 2003, the university has 1,749 faculty members and 14,454 students.
