Businessman. Born in Okayama Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in 1922 (Taisho 11) and joined the Bank of Japan. Sent to Germany in 1924 (Showa 4), he became director of Shanghai Huaxing Commercial Bank and counselor of the Ministry of Greater East Asia in 1939. At the end of the war, he worked hard to repatriate Japanese people from the mainland as counselor of the Shanghai Embassy. In 1954, he became a permanent member of the Japan Association for the Promotion of International Trade. In 1962, he visited China with Tatsunosuke Takasaki and concluded the LT Trade Agreement, and in 1968, as representative of the Japan-China Memorandum of Trade (MT) Office, he played a major role in the normalization of Japan-China relations. He continued to work hard to expand economic relations as a permanent advisor to the Japan-China Economic Association. As a businessman, he rebuilt Ikegai Iron Works and Maruzen Oil, which fell into management crisis during the chaotic postwar period, and became vice president of Japan Helicopter in 1952 and president of All Nippon Airways (ANA) in 1962. He took responsibility for the plane crashes off the coast of Haneda in 1966 and off the coast of Matsuyama in 1967, and resigned in 1967. He died on September 22, 1989.

実業家。岡山県生まれ。1922年（大正11）東京帝国大学法学部を卒業し、日本銀行に入行。29年（昭和4）ドイツに派遣され、39年上海(シャンハイ)華興(かこう)商業銀行の理事、大東亜省参事官となる。終戦時には上海大使館参事官として大陸の日本人引揚げに尽力した。54年日本国際貿易促進協会の常任委員に就任。62年高碕(たかさき)達之助とともに訪中してLT貿易協定を結び、68年日中覚書貿易（MT）事務所代表として、日中国交正常化に大きな役割を果たす。その後も日中経済協会常任顧問として経済関係拡充に尽力した。実業家としては、戦後の混乱期に経営危機に陥った池貝鉄工、丸善石油を建て直し、52年日本ヘリコプター副社長、62年全日本空輸（全日空）社長となる。66年羽田沖、67年松山沖墜落事故の責任をとり、67年辞任。89年9月22日没。
