The history of ceramics in Thailand can be divided into two periods, beginning with the establishment of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th century and ending with the Sukhothai Kingdom. The oldest pottery is said to be Banchen pottery, made of Bengala and decorated with swirl and spiral patterns, and is said to date to either 3000 BC or AD. Before the Sukhothai Kingdom, glazed pottery was produced in black, influenced by Khmer pottery. The Sukhothai Kingdom was established in the mid-13th century, and pottery production flourished in the royal capital of Sukhothai and its secondary capital, Si Satchanalai.
