A deciduous tall tree of the legume family. It grows to a height of 6-7m. The leaves are even-pinnate compound leaves similar to those of wisteria, with 3-6 pairs of leaflets, oblong, leathery, 15-23cm long and 5cm wide. From April to June, numerous flowers are produced in panicles 80-100cm long. There are no petals, and the four sepals are petal-like, initially orange-yellow or orange, then red. There are red calyx-like bracts at the base of the flower. The stamens and pistils protrude from the outside of the flower, creating a beautiful sight. The pods are 10-25cm long, and contain 4-8 flat, oblong seeds. Native to India, it is planted in temple precincts as a sacred tree where Buddha was born, and flowers are offered to Buddha. In some areas, it is used for lining streets. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
