(1) An Armenian dynasty from 886 to 1045. It rose to power under Arab rule, received the Armenian throne from the caliph, and became de facto independent. It reached its height in the late 10th century to early 11th century, but was destroyed when its capital, Ani, was taken by the Byzantine Empire. (2) A Georgian dynasty from 888 to 1801. It is also called the Bagrationid dynasty. It began in the 9th century when Ashot of the Georgian Bagrat family established a principality in southwestern Georgia.
