A small freshwater animal of the phylum Tentacula, class Bryozoa, order Scutigeridae, family Pectinatidae. Small animal bodies called zooids reproduce by asexual budding and are buried in agar secreted by the animal itself, forming clump-like colonies about 1.5 cm in diameter. They live attached to aquatic plants in ponds and marshes throughout Japan, and are somewhat mobile. Zooids have 70 to 80 tentacles. As is common with freshwater bryozoans, they produce dormant buds for wintering. The shape of these dormant buds is important for classification. The dormant buds of Pectinatella gelatinosa are oval, saddle-shaped, and have spines on both ends. They can be easily distinguished from the closely related Pectinatella gelatinosa, which produces round, spineless dormant buds.
