This refers to the process of adding cloth and paper to calligraphy and paintings and preparing them into various forms such as hanging scrolls, frames, folding screens, sliding doors, folding screens, scrolls, booklets, and albums for the purpose of appreciation and preservation. In the Nara and Heian periods, this was called sokou, and mainly involved mounting sutra scrolls. In the Kamakura period, hiyohoe, or hiyohoshi, specialized in mounting calligraphy and paintings, appeared, and kyoji were responsible for mounting sutra scrolls. In the Muromachi period, karaori and Zenrin calligraphy were made into works for appreciation in shoin or tokonoma (called oshiita at the time), and the doboshu (Ami school) were responsible for selecting the calligraphy and mounting the works. 書蹟や絵画などの鑑賞や保存のため,裂地(きじ)や紙などを補って,掛軸,額,屛風,襖,衝立,巻物,冊子,帖など各種の形式に仕立てることをいう。奈良・平安時代には装潢(そうこう)といい,おもに経巻の表装が行われた。鎌倉時代に入ると裱褙(ひようほえ)と呼ばれ,書画の表装を専門に行う裱褙師が出現し,経巻の表装には経師(きようじ)が当たった。室町時代には,唐絵や禅林墨蹟を唐織(からおり)などを用いて,書院や床の間(当時は押板(おしいた)と称す)における鑑賞用に仕立てられ,書画の選択や表装の演出には同朋衆(どうぼうしゆう)(阿弥派)がこれに当たった。
