Albuquerque - Afonso de Albuquerque (English spelling)

Portugal's second Viceroy of India (in office 1509-1515). Born into a family of minor nobility, he was active as a soldier in the Mediterranean and North Africa from a young age. In 1503, he led a fleet to India with his nephew Francisco. After returning home in 1506, he received an order to be appointed Viceroy in 1508, and went to India again as a commander. After passing through various places on the southern coast of Africa, he attacked Socotra Island at the southern entrance of the Gulf of Aden in 1507, and reached Hormuz, making it a tributary state of Portugal. In 1509, he attacked Kozhikode (Calicut) in India, but failed, but occupied Goa in 1510 and Malacca, which prospered as a key point of East-West maritime traffic, in 1511, laying the foundation for the Portuguese maritime empire to confront the Muslims. In 1513 he unsuccessfully attacked Aden, but in 1515 he visited Hormuz again and built a fort there, but he fell ill there and returned to Goa, where he died on board a ship in the harbor.
