〘Noun〙① A general term for things played with musical instruments or sung by people. Currently, it often refers to popular songs sung to the accompaniment of the shamisen. ※Meigoki (1275) 5 "With music, singing becomes sung" ※Sarugaku Dangi (1430) The heart of music "It is important to perform music in front of people, with those of the way participating" ② In Noh, it refers to the musical element as opposed to the visual elements of dance, action, and other movements. ※Fushikaden (around 1400-02) 1 "When Noh becomes stale, it will eventually stop. However, music, action, dance, and other unique features should not be allowed to continue" ③ Adjustment of the throat or change of voice (Nippo Jisho (1603-04)).

〘名〙① 楽器で演奏するものや人が歌うものの総称。現在では、多く、三味線に合わせてうたう俗曲をいう。※名語記（1275）五「音曲にて、うたふをもうたとなづく」※申楽談儀（1430）音曲の心根「人の前にて、道の者参会して音曲する、大事也」② 能楽で、舞、働きなど視覚的要素の所作に対し、音楽的要素をいう。※風姿花伝（1400‐02頃）一「能、物くさく成りたちぬれば、やがて能はとまる也。ただ、音曲・はたらき・舞などならでは、せさすべからず」③ のどの調節、または声の変化（日葡辞書（1603‐04））。
