Officially the United Republic of the Netherlands. After the Eighty Years' War, the country's independence was officially recognized by the other powers in the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. Each state had sovereignty, and each city enjoyed almost complete autonomy. In particular, the Dutch State Assembly, led by the wealthy merchants of Amsterdam, bore the majority of the country's finances and therefore had a powerful voice in the federal parliament. The mid-17th century was the height of the country's political, economic and cultural heyday, producing such artists as Rembrandt, Grotius and Spinoza. In the latter half of the century, the country fell into decline after wars with England and France, and collapsed in 1795 with the invasion of French troops, becoming the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815. → Related topics Witt | William [I] | William [I] | House of Orange-Nassau | Netherlands | The Hague | Utrecht | Union of Utrecht Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
