…In the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), in central Africa, the province was renamed Katanga in 1972. Its area is 497,000 km2, its population is 5.6 million (1994), and its capital is Lubumbashi (formerly Elisabethville).
