1801‐59 Governor of Croatia in northern Yugoslavia. Although he was pro-Austrian from his youth, he also participated in the Illyrian movement, which advocated the unification of the South Slavic peoples. During the revolution of 1848-49, he was appointed Governor of Croatia by the Austrian Emperor. To gain the support of the people, he declared the abolition of feudal relations, but was influenced by the Vienna conservatives and marched to suppress the Hungarian Revolution. Even in Vienna, Croatian soldiers were feared as counter-revolutionaries of the "Red Mantle." In return, he was approved to annex Dalmatia and Rijeka.
