He was one of the Tensho Embassies to Europe. He was born in Nakaura, Omura Domain, Hizen Province (Nakaura, Saikai-cho, Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture) and in 1580 (Tensho 8) he became the first graduate of the seminary (minor seminary) in Arima. He was selected as the vice envoy of the youth embassy, which departed from Nagasaki Port in 1582 and met with the Pope in Rome. He returned to Japan in 1590, when Christianity was banned, and joined the Society of Jesus in Amakusa the following year in 1591. He was sent to the seminary in Macau in 1601 (Keicho 6) to study ethical theology, and became a priest in 1608. He remained in Japan when Christianity was banned in 1614, and continued his missionary work in hiding for the next 20 years, mainly in Arima and Kuchinotsu (both in Nagasaki Prefecture). He was arrested in Kokura (Fukuoka Prefecture) at the end of 1632 (Kan'ei 9), and on October 21st the following year, 1633, he was executed by hanging from a hole in Nishizaka, Nagasaki for four days and martyred. At that time, he is said to have cried out, "I am Father Julian Nakaura who went to Rome."
