[Born] 6th year of the Zhenguan Dynasty (632), Chang'an Died: November 13, 682. Monk of the Tang Dynasty in Chang'an, China. Founder of the Hosso sect. Master Jion. He became a monk at a young age and became a disciple of Xuanzang. He studied Indian languages and then worked on translating sutras at the Jion Temple. He wrote many treatises, including the Yuishiki Shuki (20 volumes), the Cheng Yuishiki Lun Shuyao (4 volumes), the Mahāyāna Hōen Girinshō (7 volumes), and the Yogaron Ryakusan (16 volumes). On the anniversary of his death, a Jion-e ceremony is held at Yakushi-ji and Kofuku-ji, the head temples of the Hosso sect in Japan, to hold a memorial service. The principal image of the Jion-e ceremony, the statue of Master Jion, was made in the 11th century and is one of the few surviving portraits from the Heian period, and remains in both temples.
