The sixth canton in the Swiss Confederation. However, it is divided into two half cantons, Obwalden (area 491 km2, population 31,000 in 1996) and Nidwalden (area 276 km2, population 36,000 in 1996). Each half canton has its own constitution and government, and each sends a representative to the cantonal parliament. Unterwalden, along with Uri and Schwyz, signed the "Perpetual Union" in 1291 and became the core of the formation of the Swiss Confederation, but it had been divided into two regions even before that.
