[Died] September 14, 2005. Los Angeles, California. American film director and producer. Known for his work across a wide range of genres. In 1931, he enrolled at Franklin College to study journalism, but gave up his studies due to the Great Depression. In 1933, he began working as a sound, music, and special effects editor at the Hollywood film studio RKO. In 1939, he was promoted to film editor. He edited Orson Welles' masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941) and other films. He made his directorial debut in 1944. His first film, The Set-Up (1949), about match-fixing in the professional boxing world, was a critical acclaimed hit. The musical West Side Story (1961), which he co-directed with choreographer Jerome Robbins, won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. His greatest work, the musical film The Sound of Music (1965), was a box office success that went on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. His later works include The Andromeda Strain (1971) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). He served as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1984 to 1987.

アメリカ合衆国の映画監督,制作者。幅広いジャンルの作品を手がけたことで知られる。1931年ジャーナリズムを学ぶためフランクリン大学に入学したが,大不況により勉学の道を断念。1933年ハリウッドの映画スタジオ RKOで音響,音楽,特殊効果の編集者として仕事を始めた。1939年フィルム編集者に昇格。オーソン・ウェルズ監督の名作『市民ケーン』Citizen Kane(1941)などの編集に携わった。1944年監督デビュー。プロボクシング界の八百長をめぐる映画『罠』The Set-Up(1949)で初めて高い評価を得た。振付師のジェローム・ロビンズと共同で監督を手がけたミュージカル映画『ウエスト・サイド物語』West Side Story(1961)は,作品賞,監督賞など 10部門でアカデミー賞を受賞。最大の代表作となったミュージカル映画『サウンド・オブ・ミュージック』The Sound of Music(1965)は,映画史上に残る興行的成功を収め,アカデミー賞でも作品賞,監督賞など 5部門を制した。後期の代表作は『アンドロメダ…』The Andromeda Strain(1971),『スター・トレック』Star Trek: The Motion Picture(1979)など。1984~87年映画芸術科学アカデミーの会長を務めた。
