Kashmir: A region stretching from northwestern India to northeastern Pakistan. It became a British protectorate in 1846, but since 1947 it has been a disputed area between India and Pakistan, and has seen three wars since then. Currently, the ceasefire line established by the 1972 peace agreement serves as the border, but conflicts continue. The main city is Srinagar, India. Cashmere, which originates from this region, is a high-quality woolen fabric made primarily from cashmere yarn spun from the fine wool of the Kashmir goat.

カシミール(カシュミール。Kashmir)▼インド北西部からパキスタン北東部に広がる地方。一八四六年に英国の保護領となったが、一九四七年以降はインドとパキスタンの係争地として三度も戦争が起こり、現在は七二年の和平協定による停戦ラインが国境となっているが、紛争は絶えない。中心都市はインドのスリナガル。この地方を原産とする「カシミヤ」は、カシミヤ山羊(Kashmir goat)の良質な毛を紡いだカシミヤ糸を主材料とした高級毛織物。
