La Durance (English spelling)

Japanese: デュランス[川]（英語表記）La Durance

A river in southeastern France. It is the largest tributary of the Rhône, with a total length of about 304 km. It originates in the Pérebou mountain range in the southern French Alps, flows south between the Cotienne Alps on the French-Italian border, and then enters the hills of Provence near Sisteron in the middle reaches. Downstream from its confluence with the Verdon, famous for its gorge, it flows almost westward and empties into the Rhône near Avignon. In the lower reaches, where the climate is Mediterranean with dry summers, most of the water is diverted south by irrigation canals and flows into Lake Verdon on the Mediterranean coast.

フランス南東部の川。ローヌ川最大の支流で，全長約304km。フランス･アルプス南部のペルブー山群に源を発し，フランス･イタリア国境のコティエンヌ･アルプスとの間を南流したのち，中流のシストロン付近でプロバンスの丘陵地帯に出る。峡谷で名高いベルドン川との合流点より下流ではほぼ西流し，アビニョン付近でローヌ川に注ぐ。夏に乾燥する地中海式気候をもつ下流部では，大部分の水が灌漑用水路で南に分流され，地中海岸のベール湖に流入している。
