First, regarding the date, there are various theories ranging from the upper limit, which is believed to be the 5th century BC historian Hellanicos's theory that he was a contemporary of the Trojan War (the 3rd century BC geographer and mathematician Eratosthenes' theory that Troy fell in 1183 BC), to the lower limit, which is believed to be the 4th century BC historian Theopompus's theory that he lived 500 years after the Trojan War. However, today, it seems appropriate to date Homer to the late 8th century BC, because the 7th century BC poets Kallinos and Archilochus mention Homer, and a group of epic poems collectively known as the "kyklos," which sing the parts of the Trojan War story that were not covered in the "Iliad" and "Odyssey," were created around the 7th to 6th centuries BC, assuming the existence of both poems. As for his birthplace, more than ten cities competed for the honor of being the poet's birthplace, but most traditions name Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) and then Chios.
