A city on the right bank of the Cauvery River in central Tamil Nadu, southeastern India. Formerly known as Trichinopoly. A key railway and commercial center. Industries include rolling stock, cement, textiles, and tobacco. It was the capital of several Dravidian dynasties from the 10th to 17th centuries. It was the site of a fierce battle between the British and French armies in the Karnataka War of the 18th century. The Raghunathaswamy Temple in the north is famous. Population: 1,023,000 (2011).
